Welcome

What is Probation?    What does Probation do?

This website presents up-to-date information on the Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Trust, which will answer these questions - and provide the answers to many more.

In 2008 we became one of the first Probation Trusts, which presents new opportunities for Leicestershire and Rutland. Our Trust Board members now have the freedom to manage monetary surpluses and deficits over a longer period. This flexibility ensures that resources can be better directed to meet local needs and priorities.

We want you to email us with your thoughts and concerns about your community. We have translated text in the following languages to ensure our site is more accessible. Please watch the video clips, which we hope will give you a better understanding of our work. The Probation Service’s primary aims are to protect the public by supervising offenders in the community - and reduce re-offending by working with men and women on supervision to enable them to maintain productive and lawful lifestyles.

We also have a designated team who link directly with victims of crime to keep them fully informed of the criminal justice process.

About us

Our number one priority is the protection of the public. The Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Trust (LRPT) works towards this key aim by supervising offenders and working with them to target their offending behaviour.

Supervision

Did you know? Supervision with the Probation Service is more effective at reducing crime than a short sentence in prison. The latest national figures show that frequency of re-offending for community sentences has fallen sharply by 13%. The re-offending rate following a short custodial sentence is 59.7%. The re-offending rate following a community sentence is 37.9%.

Re-Offending

Did you know?Nationally, there has been a recent 11% reduction in predicted re-offending rates for men and women who have attended General Offending Behaviour Programmes. These programmes are about teaching offenders how to improve their problem solving skills to find better ways to resolve potentially difficult situations.

Community Payback

Did you know? The local Community Payback campaign has enabled Leicestershire and Rutland to promote the benefits of Unpaid Work to local communities and local authorities.

In a 12 month period supervised offenders completed more than 175,000 hours of reparation work for local charities, schools, church trusts, faith groups and Local Authorities.

It is important that our range of work covers both urban and rural projects - work that wouldn’t otherwise have got done.
