Leicestershire Cares
Leicestershire Cares is part of a national movement of Cares partnerships, dedicated to matching the talents and skills of employees with the needs of local communities. Leicestershire Cares is also committed to addressing the needs of the most disadvantaged in society and creating sustainable change.
Teams of employee volunteers tackle and complete a range of practical challenges for the local community. Team Challenges take no more than a day to complete and involve up to 11 people including a Team Leader.
Individuals can get involved in a variety of activities from mentoring in schools, to helping out in a homeless shelter, to providing business guidance.
Last year two of our teams spent a day re-decorating a community centre in Leicester.
It was a useful team-building exercise but staff also felt they were making a positive contribution to a community group. It is hoped that two more teams will take part this year.
Employment
Employment is an important aspect of an individual’s rehabilitation – it can help halve the risk of re-offending. Leicestershire Cares runs a successful project offering ex-offenders two-week mentored work placements with local businesses.
The benefits for the participating companies include:
- direct impact on the lives of individuals and the safety of the community,
- unique development opportunity for employees,
- access to a large pool of potentially loyal and motivated employees, and
- a cost effective means of staff development.
Leicestershire Cares, APEX and LRPA are also involved in a project called PSPlus, which helps ex-offenders with employment, training and education. If a participant has been out of work for a long time, the two week mentored work placement can be used on a CV – and generates a reference.
