How Probation Works

The aims of the Probation Service are:

  • Protecting the public
  • Reducing re-offending
  • The proper punishment of offenders in the community
  • Ensuring offenders' awareness of the effects of crime on the victims of crime and the public
  • Rehabilitation of offenders.

hostel-work.jpg The Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Area (LRPA) is an integral part of the Criminal Justice System. Probation staff supervise offenders who are on a Community order or have been released from prison on licence. Probation Service Officers and Probation Officers also prepare court reports for sentencers as well as working in prisons and with the victims of crime.

Values of LRPA

  • Treating all people fairly, openly and with respect.
  • A commitment to valuing diversity and acting in an anti-discriminatory way.
  • An uncompromising stance against the harm caused by crime.
  • A strong belief in the capacity of people to change.
  • The importance of taking personal responsibility for behaviour
  • The necessity of learning from experience.

 Partnership Approach

The Probation Service works closely with the Police and the Prison Service to protect the public and reduce re-offending.

This partnership approach is demonstrated in its work with the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA ) that manages the supervision of the most dangerous offenders, and the Local Criminal Justice Board (LCJB ).

The Leicestershire and Rutland Criminal Justice Board is one of 42 boards that cover England and Wales. The boards were created to ensure that the different criminal justice agencies improve the way they work together by bringing more criminals to justice - and by giving the right support to witnesses and victims of crime .

Members of the LCJB are:

  • Leicestershire Constabulary
  • Crown Prosecution Service
  • HM Courts Service
  • HM Prison Service
  • National Probation Service
  • Leicestershire and City Youth Offending Services
  • East Midlands Legal Services Commission.
